Introduction

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation South West Region invites you to a day conference dealing with the subtleties, nuances and complexity of the law in relation to the historic environment. The programme has been designed to be a timely update on legal issues and challenges facing the heritage sector. The speakers range from practicing barristers, acknowledged national experts in their fields and representatives from Historic England and the Canal and River Trust.

This conference seeks to provide a robust background for practitioners on the fast-moving legal framework which underpins our day to day work particularly in relation to challenging issues such assessing and measuring significance in the historic environment. We will look to continue and develop the understanding of more detailed issues such as the curtilage of heritage assets.

The legal framework surrounding the management of our historic environment is a subject highly relevant to all practitioners; planners, conservation officers, archaeologists, solicitors, architects, landscape architects and urban designers dealing with decision-making relating to our heritage. The day conference will include lunch and will be held at the Grade II listed Armada House in Bristol. The venue is easily accessible by car, train or plane (Exeter or Bristol airports).
